I know there are many other posts on this subject, but maybe I'm too dumb to understand. My problem is I have a 2wd 76 with manual steering. Everytime I ask about power steering I am sent to 4x4 specific conversions. The conversions are based on the front axle type which doesn't help me. Was power steering not available in the 2wd models? Must I change spindles to adapt the the front end for a 4x4 power steering setup? (I don't know if this can be done?)
PS on a 2wd was definitly available thru out the years. It is a fairly straight forward swap.
You will need the steering box, hoses, pump and brackets..... you will probably also need the PS steering column, it is a different length than the non-power.
Also depending on your engine type you may need to "adjust" the drivers side engine mount or replace it with a PS one. This is true on the FE family of engines, not to sure about all the others.
Pretty much all you need to do is remove the manual box, install the PS box, pump, brackets, belt and hoses. Then hook up the steering shaft to the new box, this is where you may need to swap steering columns.
Any 73-79 setup will work, and I think even the 67-72 ones also. Just be sure you stay with the same Series, meaning if you have an F250 get an F250 setup.
Hope this helps.
You need to get a power steering column, pump (duh), and gear box. When you get one, from a junk yard, stop buy the parts house and get an upper seal repair kit, and new hoses. I don't honestly know if the steering column is different, but I think that the end of the column is shorter, because the power steering gearbox is bigger, or at least longer.
I did this to my '73 F100 2wd. (Assuming it's a 1/2 ton 2wd) you need:
1. power steering column from 73-79 2wd (center shaft is shorter) - or the center shaft could be swapped out of a power column into your manual column
2. power steering box from F100/F150 2wd
3. pump with brackets and hoses to match your engine
Just unbolt the manual column and box. Then bolt up the power box, column, pump and you're set. Easy, easy, easy. Mine cost $50 and 1/2 hour - made my '73 much easier and more fun to drive.
