I've been seeing this sign for quite a while now and it really bugs me. Why do we need it? If you can't read, why do you care if there is a library nearby?
I think a lot of our signage is moving to symbols rather than text. This is due to our multilingual society! That way signs don't have to be printed in several languages.

I kind of figured that was part of the reason, but it still strikes me as strange that we need to pander to every other language.

Read the "American Disabilities Act" It's on Fire Alarm Pull Stations also and on Apartment Intercoms that only have LCD displays. I'm told that by 2005 all remotes must comply also.
Next thing you know we will be able to read braille on our gear shifts.
