Humming SD
I went for a spin on the beach today and I heard a humming that would increase with speed. My hubs were locked, but I wasn't in 4wd. I thought it was because I hadn't locked my hubs in about a month (shame on me), and everything was just getting lubed up and finding it's groove once again. I stopped and unlocked my hubs, and yet the sound was still there! The sound is a medium pitched hum that would start to chuckle out around 5 mph, then flat die. When I got back on the road, I couldn't hear it over the tire & road noise, but when I pulled back onto the sand it was still there. I don't know if this has anything to do with it...but the drivers side hub was harder then heck to lock and unlock while at the beach. When I got home, they locked and unlocked smoothly. Weather and mosquitos permitting, I'm going to check the fluid in both axles...anything else I should be on the lookout for?

When you unlock them, check the axle shafts by hand. Reach in there and try to turn the shafts by hand.
I have found numerous trucks that even though they are not locked in but the axle shaft was still "stuck" locked. A few turns of the locking device on the hubs cured it. Not sure what causes it besides lack of excercise.
