I purchase one of these 40 gallon fuel tanks from Delta that you bolt down to the bed of the truck behind the cab. I purchased a 12 volt pump and all the extras for pumping external of the truck.
The documentation that came with the tank say it is not DOT certified for flammable fuels. I realize that most guys are hauling diesel in these tanks but I need to haul gasoline. I did some checking around and did find some that were DOT certified for flammable fuels...really expensive. I don't see any difference other than the certification label on these two tanks. I definately want to be safe about the whole idea but I think its just an expensive tank certification that the tank manufacture must go through and then pass that cost on to the customer.
Does anybody have any experience with hauling gasoline in these tanks?
If memory serves me right, the DOT specs are based on the integrity of the tank and it's ability to stay in one piece in case of an accident. Forty gallons of gasoline flying all over the place in a severe accident ain't my idea of fun. If you think this can't happen, you might recall the truck BBQ problems that GM dealt with in the 70's.
I would pay the extra $$ for a DOT Flammable rated tank.

I have looked at http://www.transferflow.com/index.html before and I don't see any difference in that one and the one I purchased. The thing that caught my eye was the DOT exemption and not DOT approved.
Someone mentioned that if you carry less than 120 gallons you are ok. I wonder if this is how these tanks are DOT exempt?
