Thinking about buying another Ranger with the 4.0L engine. I know this engine has had the SOHC since 2001 and was the same engine used in the Explorer. The Explorer engine did have problems with the timing chains. Does anyone know if similar problems are now occuring with the 4.0L engine in the Rangers? How good are these SOHC 4.0L Ranger engines?
Yeah,i think i've seen threads where someone would hear what they thought was a knock on startup but it turned out to be the timing chain, i also thought the dealer fixed it too, but im' not 100% on that
I have that engine and its a good strong motor. I had the "timing chain rattle", but it was fixed for free at the dealer. If I was in the market for another Ranger, I would look at nothing else but the SOHC. The gas mileage sucks, but you can't have everything!
Timing chain "rattle" is still an issue. My 2002 Ranger 4.0 L with 7400 miles began to have what sounded like severe engine ping.
It was the timing chain: a 6-hour warranty job by the dealer. They only missed re-connecting one sensor when I picked it up, but the dealer had to keep it another day to re-check everything.
Pretty dissapointing at less than 7500 miles on a new engine - what a pain.
My question is , Will the dealer fix it for free ? My 2001 Ranger 4.0 is making the noise after 24,000 mi. and , I'm not under warranty anymore. I know the NHTSA has this problem on its website (#637920) , with the Ford Service Bulletin # 0281.

I'd like to know too -- also, what happens if this is not fixed or is it just an annoyance?
Wow! This site is great! I want to thank everyone who responded to my question. It's too bad that Ford dropped this Explorer engine (with its troubles already known) into the Ranger. I presently have a 1993 3.0L Ranger with 255,000 Km. No engine troubles at all. Thought the 4.0L would be a better engine to pull a double enclosed snowmobile trailer. Not sure if I would take a chance on it now.
I don't know what it is with these engines myself but I like mine. In my 2001 it started to rattle at about 15000. With the advent of 0% interest I traded for a 2002 and no rattle yet at 27000.
