I just bought a 02 F250 V10 CC 4x4. I love this truck except for the A/C and this weird starting problem. I've noticed a few times when starting, first thing in the morning, that the throttle will surge for about a second. Last weekend it happened and my wife asked why I had the throttle floored, with a tone of calling me an idiot. Has anyone else had this happen? It seems to only do it after sitting for a day or so but not always.
Intermittent things are hard to diagnose (not to mention vai the internet ) my suggestion would be to watch for it and document as much possible information as you can such as, how long the truck has sat between each driving cycle, weather conditions, starting procedure etc.
If you begin to develop a pattern, come back here or go see your dealer. I (and others) could guess at the various cuases for an brief high idle but it would probably cause more worry to you than need be.
How many miles are on the truck and what is the problem with your AC? Not cold enough? Have 'em check the pressure.
I have about 1600 miles on it and have had for about a month.
The A/C stinks, so I'll have the dealer check that. I've been following the posts regarding the A/C problem. The good thing is I have a dealer about a mile away so its easy to keep taking it back.
Mine has always started with a roar but it's not abnormal. I believe this is the way they were set up. I don't know what the rpm is on startup but I'll check.
I have an 02 also and it has done the same thing since day one. My RPM's jump up to almost 2000. After about a minute or so it comes back down to under 1000. I have about 3 or 4 different noises my truck makes on startup. So far have not been able to pin it down as to what is going on. Took her to the dealer and got the "thats normal operation" speach. They can't tell my what is making the noise either. If it is normal then they should be able to tell my what is making the noise. At least I think so.
>Mine has always started with a roar but it's not abnormal.
Mine ROARS!! Airaid and a Flowmaster 40 will do that! But it jumps to around 1800 or so and settles down into it's regular 1000 rpm idle till everything gets a bit warm. Normal. 'cept for the "music"...
Wow, I'm glad I asked the dumb question. I'll have to tell the wife I'm not as crazy as she thinks.
I'm using 87 octane, too poor to put in the good stuff. I guess the roar sound better describes what is going on. All those ponies wanting to get up and out. I won't worry about it too much.
CY, I checked mine this morning on start up and it jumped quickly to around 1700 and gradually came down. just like the other guys have described. I consider this normal. Hopr this helps re-assure you.
>I'm using 87 octane, too poor to put in the good stuff.
Higher octane fuel is not the "good stuff". With a 9.1:1 Compression ratio, your truck will operate just fine with 87. Do not think that higher octane fuel will give you anything but a wallet that empties faster. (unless you chip it.)

My 2001 V-10 has always done the roar for a second when started cold in the morning. Has a few other intermittant noises on startup like yours. Also has the knock for a minute or so when started cold. Sounds like the piston slap to me but I have been told that the 2001 V-10 does not have this issue. Anyway, none of this has caused any problems so far, but only 13,000 miles on the truck.
A/C is another issue though. On some of these trucks it simply does not work as it should. So far I have not seen a slam dunk fix for that anywhere.
Brakes are often also marginal on these trucks. I have had mine looked at by the dealer. They agreed that they should be better and changed out some parts. No improvement though. Now they say it is the way the brakes are on these trucks. When any brake work needs to be done, I won't go with the Ford replacement rotors etc. I have been told that several after market rotors and pads work much better to stop these big trucks.
