Someone once told me the idea behind the surge was to get the oil moving in a hurry, and that it causes nearly the same amount of wear to start it in the morning at 2000 rpms as 800, so the benefits out-weigh the consequences. The newest Ford I own is my '89, and it surges to about 1400-1500. The 2001 Windstar I drive for a living surges it's little 3.8L to nearly 3000 on startup.

When my truck starts it hits 1700-2000 rpm, then quickly drops to 1000 rpm. Seems perfectly normal to me. I have never had a vehicle that did not do something similar on starting.
Well, might as well throw in my 2 cents. Talked to the mechanic this morning about my V8 doing the same thing. My worry is oil not being there for those high RPM starts. He laughed and said that's why Ford recomends 5W30 & 5W40, gets that thin stuff up there in a hurry!!
Whant to also say thanks to Steve for all the good info and parts regarding the headlights. Aero conversion, the only tough part is connecting the pig tail to the old wiring so the new bulbs will plug in.
Thanks
Funny, mine only does it when you put it in gear, 02 F250 V10 Auto. One garage door later you learn to put your foot on the brake HARD when you put it in gear.
My SD does exactly what you describe above. When I start it after it has sat for two or more days, the RPMs surge to around 3000 with a roar and then settle back down. If I start it every day then I see what others are seeing (a surge to 1700 or so).

Why the difference?

Well since I shared this problem with everyone it really hasn't done it.
I feel better that it just might be an inherent problem. I'm OK with it just as long as someone doesn't write about that happening and a head blowing off
Some various ramblings to the different posts:
The throttle surge at startup is to get the cats warmed up so that the vehicle can run in closed loop mode for emissions.
5W30 was recommended due to the tighter tolerances in engine machining over the last few years, especially for journal clearances on the overhead cams.
5W20 is for fuel economy due to the lower viscosity.
When you hear the fan roar at cold startup, it is known as morning sickness. The clutch fluid has backed up into the drive chamber.
