Question Question from new guy....again

Im wanting to keep everything original or close to as possible on my 64 f100.

Would it make any sense to change oil bath to paper , and change generator to alternator?? I have a 223, and I feel that everything should be fine the way it is, but if you guys have any insight from your experiences, I'd like to know about em....

Thanks,

Phillip

Honestly, I would upgrade those
They both work, but they went out for a reason.
It wouldn't make your truck worth any less in my opinion

If they have worked for 40 years, they'll probabally work for a few more.

The only reason oil bath air cleaners 'went out' is they are messy and require maintanence. They are equal to or better than a paper filter as far as keeping junk out of your engine. I've retained mine on the 352 and don't plan to change it. Servicing the oil is easy enough.

Gen vs. alt, I think the only reason to change to an alt would be if you needed more charging power.

I also have a 64.I have a paper air filter because the orginal is long gone.I'm in the process of getting the parts togather to convert it to a one wire GM alt.

I wanted the original look without the mess so I hogged out the upper half of the oil bath unit and put a cheap chrome aftermarket assembly with paper element inside the two halves of the canister. Fits perfectly. I think it's 8" in diameter.

How did you remove the inside of the upper half on the oil bath? Might like to try it.

I used a Zipcut to cut the webs between the oval holes and cleaned up the sharp edge with a grinder. I had anticipated that I would have to use the aftermarket bottom half, and simply hang the original, modified top over the whole works, but the cheap chrome piece fit into the original bottom like it was made for it. The height of the whole assembly is determined by the thickness of the paper element. (You might want to measure an unmodified unit to determine how much of the bottom half should be exposed.) I used the original stud and wingnut.

I know a GM part on my Ford.I seen your post and it got me looking in the junkyards.I have a 223 in my truck and I could not find any Ford brackets that would work. There was a chevy truck with a six with a bracket and alt that would work with minor mods.
