i have a 300 with a one barrel and a 4" deep dish air cleaner but i want a K&N for it and it cost less then $30 shipped. Do you guys think it will help out a bit. thanks
Wait a miniute?!?! you are in Texas (I messed with Texas once, and got away with it) go to Pep Boys... they always had the cheapest price on the K&N's I ever saw.
The biggest advantage of upgrading to a K&N is the convenience. As long as you're not driving on dirt roads all the time, it'll last 2-3 times longer than disposables, and then you just clean it & put it back in. They're cool in the fact that they work better once they've gotten a little dirty! If you're going to be able to use it for more than 100K, it'll be a good investment.
I put a K&N in my 84' F-150 302 and haven't noticed in change in performance or mileage. I do like the the fact that I can just clean it and put it back in though and never buy another filter again.
What did help A LOT with my milage and performance though is a Tornado installed in the air filter housing over the top of the carb. I didn't run numbers for my mileage, but I can now go to work and back 5 days on what used to be 4 days of fuel. Performance also was better, I noticed immediately the accelerator took less pressure to achieve speed and passing ability had better response. I got it from NAPA for $50 and it paid for itself in fuel savings in the first month and half. It's all money in my pocket now.
The K&N was installed after the Tornado was put in, so I can't say if just the K&N would have made a noticeable difference. ~Fred
i wanted one but i have a four inch deep dish cleaner so the k&n has to be special order and the tornado i dont think they make it for a 2" to 3" opening that is avaible.
"Feel" more power no; I highly doubt you'll feel it.
However, look at the little display most stores have w/ the fan that compares a standard element to a K&N; it has a golfball floating. You can really tell a difference between them then...

No offense to the purchaser of said part in this thread, but the Tornado is a waste imo.
You're twisting air up downstream of the tb/carb that just gets straightened back out anyway when it goes into the tb/carb.
gimmick product buyers of america unite! At least the re-useable air filter assembly will pay for itself in 5 years.
The tornado suckers. Have you ever seen a super duper knife commercial? Its the sharpest and lasts forever, even after sawing though tin cans and chopping wood. Tho it looks like its made of thin cheap metal? And its available to you at 3am for 29.95?
I'm sure that air just keeps spinning like a CAT-5 all the way out the tailpipe too.
Dev93L and FaintSizzle, You are both giving an opinion on a product that you yourself have not tried, so I don't see where your opinion has much merit. It's just that, an opinion. No fact.
I have the Tornado in my truck, and I know for a FACT that it increased my mileage. I have been driving the exact route to work and back for a year. Before Tornado, 1/2 tank per day. After Tornado, 1/3 tank per day. Plain and simple, it works for my truck.
Now, since it worked for me and I am extremely happy with better gas mileage and $$ savings, don't you think I would tell all my friends and family about this? Well of course, and some tried it and others didn't. They thought like you, that they knew it wouldn't work even though they never tried it and I had with FACTUAL results.
Those that did install the Tornado have ALL found an increase in fuel mileage and are very happy with the results. Not all got the increase in mileage that I have, but a few have. The newer car type vehicles that get decent milage already, saw a smaller increase and will take a longer time to recoup the initial investment. It still pays for itself and is gravy after that. Those with older truck type vehicles had the best increase in mileage and are very happy with the Tornado.
Put one in your truck and try it before you say it doesn't work.....
Your right Fred. It was meant as tongue in cheek opinion solely based on seeing many gimmick products and infomercials in my time. I've done a good bit of back yard mechanic'ing but I can't rebuild engines.
Forget the Tornado and its couple pennies increase in gas mileage, K&N's a minute ....
You've got the same year, motor size, and 2wd I do....how bout going to my "2nd opions needed now thread" and start taking some of that in. I've tried to provide pics and as much stuff as possible to actually try to make a car type forum setting more hands on to everyone involved to actually accomplish a currently ongoing project. And in a way that puts everyone's head over the hood and on the same sheet of music. Please give the now long evolved thread a look to See what you can enlighten and help me out with. You sound like you really know your stuff.
