Wasn't paying attention at the gas pumps. I put 2.8 gallons of unleaded in tank and reliazed what I was doing. Finished topping it off with diesel. I have the big tank (think 36 gal.). Got home and put a full quart of diesel Kleen in it. Have been driving it for a few days now and seems to have no ill effects but I'm concerned about it. Will this have any effect on the engine, injectors, etc. Got to pay attention at those pumps when gas and diesel are right next to each other.
Personally I might try siphoning out some and adding a bunch more diesel but that would depend on how ambitous I felt at the time, I doubt you'll see any ill effects seems pretty diluted.
Mayhaps it puts a little undue stress and or wear and tear on the motor
Oh and FWIW a chev diesel at my shop had its tank filled with gas with approx 66k on the clock, we towed it drained it filled it up with diesel bled it got it ruhning, seemed fine, it just broke the crank in 2 spots and busted 3 of the 5 main bearing caps competely out of the block, the clock is now at 96k......however the gm 6.5 has a well deserved reputation as a piece of junk, I still cant believe its an original Detroit Diesel design
Chev garage quoted engine replacement @ 11k, needless to say Im stuck changing the slug
I wish they wouldn't put diesel and gasoline at the same pump either. Today was nice enough to ride my motorcycle and I nearly put diesel in the tank instead of gas! I realized my mistake at the last minute. Whew! I hope everything is ok on your end.
We've had guys put 4-5 gallons of gasoline in our fire trucks a couple of times before they discovered the boo boo. Our shop mechanics usually don't sweat it at that ratio. They are of course dealing with a slightly larger tank. 65 gallons. A couple of gallons probably wouldn't hurt, but then again the stress of worrying over it might kill you.
Well I've put about 130 miles on it so far. Think I'll go top it off again tomorrow and dilute it some more. Been paying really close attention to the way its running, seems fine so guess I'll just top it off every 100 miles or so for a while. Sure glad this is no ch#vy.
Yes indeed! We have a 6.5L Chevy pickup for a utility truck and it's a dog. Our PSD's sit outside and start without being plugged in. The Chevy sits inside the heated engine room and barely starts even when warm. City mechanics hate em'. Our Detroits in the fire trucks run great. The engine I drive has 470HP and runs pretty good in spite of weighing 37K. Love driving them.
that is a pretty low ratio, not recommended, probably no permanent damage. What would I do, well I would drain 50% of the fuel, put in 2 quarts of 30 non detergent mineral oil, some Power Service or Stanadyne and fill it back up with diesel. Of course that would leave me with three 5 gallon jerry cans of fuel. I would burn that mix 2.5 gallons per tank full until it was gone and use PS with it.
A liitle by mistake is OK. You are above the percentage of gas in tank by my 95 psd book but I have the 18 & 19 tanks. I keep a siphon handy just in case in tool box. One of my places to fill up has the diesel pump WAY back from station & gas pumps. Cold walk in winter but no mix ups. You can burn many types of fuel, more than in a gas engine, but some only in small quantities. Gas is one you need to make sure it is a small ratio to your main fuel supply for fueling mistakes.
