Open headers sounds terrible. Its obnoxious, and thankfully if you run open headers at least you'll warp your E-valves and I won't have to listen to you anymore =)
I prefer the sound of exhaust straight out the back with no mufflers. And from there you can use smaller outlet pipes for a more subdued (but pleasant) sound, or go with the big boys to get the neighbors pissed =).
I'm running Ford stainless shorty headers and a high flow cat system and a Magnaflow SI/DO muffler and it sounds good and performs very well. The Flowmaster sounded awesome but killed my low end torque.
i am goin to have headers going into dual exhaust with glasspacks straight out the back when my motor is finished i was thinking about running open headers for a week or 2 after my truck gets running while i get the exhaust rigged up, it sounded good before with stock manifolds with the dual exhaust before i tore it down when the 390 was only running on about 6 cylinders, i cant wait to here when its running again with headers.
i like flows on my hotrods and small 8 or 12 inch glasspacks on my old 83 supercab 302 c6 f150. i love my truck. actually at first it had a banks muffler and chrome side pipes right next to eachother coming out right after the cab on the pass. side
Headers with about 3in. striaght pipes out the back. Enough back pressure and all the noise out the back and not in the cab like open headers will do, otherwise I like it as loud as possiable.
I'm pretty partial to flowmasters. Before I got my truck, my friend had them on his camero and I grew to like them just driving around with him. I love the aggressive tone that they give. And like akford351, I've yet to hear a set of flows that I haven't liked.
I usually find myself cuttin off mufflers, I have quite the collection. If I buy a truck with a flowmaster on it, I'll have to see, otherwise it's striaght pipe for me, no cats, no muffler whether it's a 4 banger or a 460.
I also like the exhaust out the side and love the look on peoples faces when I pass them with my 300, wakes em up in the morning, either that or I get the finger.
The best feeling in the world for me is when people walkin on the street cover there ears when you go bye, boy I love that.
