Does your state have an "Engine vehicle department" or a "Motor vehicle department" ? Or did they chicken out and create a "Department of Transportation" ?
All engines are motors.
All motors are not engines.
All men(males) are humans.
All humans are not men.
Motor is the higher level.
Engine is more specific.
check out the post on April 12, 2002 by Truckertaz "names". We pretty well beat this subject up.
by the way.....do you buy a can of motor oil, or engine oil?
Off the top of my head, my truck has 5 motors and 1 engine.
- fuel pump (electric motor)
- wiper motor
- blower motor
- starter
- engine...which is also a motor according to Webster's, because one definition is "a device that produces mechanical power from fuel" which would include a gasoline-powered engine. It also actually lists "engine" as one of the definitions, and technically an internal combustion engine is both a motor and an engine. (At least, according to my particular Webster's dictionary.)
I'm sure I'm missing a couple of the electric motors, but I'm going on vacation and don't want to think that much.
When I hear the phrase "Mash yer Motor", I think it's safe to assume that someone is not suggesting I remove an electical motor from my vehicle and squeeze it in a vice
>Allan, I thought the term was " Mash The Gas...Pedal"

That must be the "Up North" term. Out in the Wild West it's usually "Mash yer Motor" or "Drop the Hammer". Sometimes you'll hear "Lay 'er Ears Back", all these terms usually imply being in the fast or "Hammer Lane".
