I swapped a 79 mid sized car 302 in place of the tired 351 m in my 78 f 150 4x4. It wont start and back fires through the carb. I am thinking maybe the 351 truck ignition module is not compatible with the 302 car distributor or maybe the 15426378 counter clockwise firing order from my Chilton manual is wrong for this motor. Before I start hunting for ignition or cam timing problems I thought I'd ask for help on this forum and that there might be something simple I'm missing.
sounds like it could be 180 degrees out of time, try spinning the distributor around and seeing if that helps. Did the motor run b4 taking it out of the car? If so was the dist. messed with?
Thanks guys,
It is a junkyard motor ( when will I learn) they said it ran when they parked it and the distributor did not look like it had been disturbed so I thought it must be something I've done . I'll set the dist. on #1 TDC and see what hahappens.
firing order is definitely right, i have those numbers glued to my memory from my 77 which had a 302, but i wonder if the distributor didnt look moved, maybe the timing chain is stretched and has jumped a tooth? just a thought.
If you guys figure this out let me know. I have the same problem right now, the backfire through the carburator is actually just gas, no fire in mine. The distributor was messed with, but is is at the number one with tdc. ???????spark is good on all plugs.
As it turns out the distributor had been out of my motor and when it was put back in it was put back in 180 degrees out of phase so yes it was firing on the #1 cylinder but on the exhaust stroke. Set yours up to fire on the intake stroke # 1 tdc ( both valves closed and it should solve your problem.
