Rear Axle Play

Guys, I just took my rear Brake drum off and was delighted to find the brake shoes and adjusters were ok. I may have found a more serious problem though! How much in and out(runout?) movement of the axle is permissible? This is almost a quater inch. How do you fix this if it is too loose? Could this be the "Shaking" problem I have been complaining about? As always, thanks for all the help I get from you all!

might be time for bearings and seals. also would be good to remove the rear cover and inspect the gears for wear. get a haynes or chiltons manual it will give you step by step instructions on any stuff needing worked on.

With all the miles you are probably right. I measured the play and it is more like an eighth of an inch rather than a quarter.

Lets just assume for a moment, that there is no play in the axle.
Now, tell me how you are going to get the C-clips out, in order to remove the axle?

In other words, I have never seen an 8.8 without at least 1/8" lateral movement of the axle.

So, nothing to worry about there (betcha something else breaks though)
