There are three little lights underneath the oil and battery guages. "THEFT", "Speed Cont.", and "OD OFF". I was wondering why none of these lights ever light up. All of the other lights seem to be working fine on the dash. Also, what do these lights do?
Well, lets seen now. The "THEFT" light would be for a factory installed security system. Does your truck have that?
I believe that the "SPEED CONT." would be the built in rev/speed limiter. Have you ever over-revved the engine or taken it to it's top speed?
The "OD OFF" would be for an automatic trans with the overdrive manually shut off. Is your truck an automatic?
Theft light (Red colored) blinks every 3-5 seconds after you have turned the ignition off. I don't have a factory installed security system, and the light blinked on my 2000 Ranger and on my 2002 Ranger and 2002 Mustang. It has to do with the PATS system, so depending on your year of Ranger, you may or may not have a blinking light. (I guess that someone at Ford thought that the light would deter thieves- LOL!)
Speed Cont.- If you have cruise control and it is on and a speed is set, the (Green colored) light comes on.
OD off- As Dealford said, only with automatic tranny and when you press the button at the end of the gear selector, the light comes on.
I have a 5 speed but fifth gear is (D) (overdrive). I guess it only comes on if it's an automatic? But the manual said "If the light does not come on when the transmission control switch is depressed or if the light flashes when you are driving, have your vehicle serviced"
THEFT
I do not have the Securilock Passive Anti-theft System, after refering to the manual. But my grandfather has it in his Mazda B3000, although, i don't understand how it works with his. Is there a chip inside of his key the interacts with it?
Speed Cont.
After looking at droptop's post and refering to the manual i understand what this is now.

Yes, his car key has a small ID chip in it that the car is programmed to recognize on startup. If the car is attempted to be started without a key that it is programmed to recognize, the car will not start (or immediately stall out).
The door locks do not require a key with a chip in it. A regular, correctly cut key will open them.
There are several posts about the PATS system if you want to read more.
