I have 1983 Ranger with 2.8 motor. The owner before me did a "rebuild" on the motor. I got it in running shape but he had unhooked or blocked off a lot of the vaccumm lines...but it ran great ...... until recently.
one day it started chugging, backfired a couple times and then quit!Since then I have had a heck of a time. I have replaced the ignition module..the caburater...the fuel pump...the coil.
It seems like it gets close to running good again then starts stalling out and then we start all over again. ANY HELP will be appreciated!
Recheck the timing. Do a compression check. Readjust the valves. I think it was 14 intake and 16 exhaust (cold) but can check if you need the info. Try a vacuum guage to see if you can spot problems. Even cranking the engine will tell you quite a bit with the guage. I had similar problems with my 83 2.8, it kept blowing out rotors in the distributor. Had about 4 go in 2 months. One heck of a bang when it lets go. Turned out to be a faulty batch of rotors, but the last one blew out the timing gears. The cam gear was nylon and couldn't take the beating.
