I had limited success chasing my problem down. Mine started with two codes 0402, and 0401. I bought a reader and cleared them, and watched the failure rate in an attempt to see if that could help me figure out the problem. I never saw the 0402 code again, and I continued to get 0401 codes about 1 out of 3 days of driving 30 miles a day.
I first replaced the EGR valve and it didn't solve the problem. I kept getting 401 codes and gas mileage was going down hill. It seemed to get worse weekly. I was down to about 7mpg for a day of driving around town.
I was checking my I/M readings and saw that the monitor for EGR System read Not Ready. I checked with Ford and went ahead and repaced the DPFE sensor..Bingo. Gas mileage is back up, and it seems to be running smoother.
