Just today I was checking my vacuum hose connections because I ran my pcv line from the back of the intake manifold to the top of the manifold at the vacuum tree since I heard on this site that it would help solve the problem of oil being pushed into the air filter. I decided to change it back because it didn't help much and when I pulled off the plug I made for the back of the intake (the plug was some hose with a bolt in the end), pure oil poored out of the plug. So instead of just a little vapors coming through the pcv line, I have it pushing oil. I checked the oil level and its about a quart low, but there is no blueish smoke coming out of the exhaust. So the engine is pushing oil into the intake manifold and the air box. Is there any fix for this, or will I need a rebuild? Its a '92, 302 with 101,000 on it. Thanks for any help.
If you PCV is working correctly, there is no fix. The re-routing of the PCV to the center of the intake isn't to make it run better, but to prevent all the crankcase vapors from dumping into the #8 runner and killing that cylinder. Sounds like the damage has been done. You should know that you may be able to run a long time in this condition depending on how it runs for you. But if you want it to stop pushing oil where it shouldn't, you will need a ring job at least. In mine it was so bad that the #8 piston got burnt and needed to be replaced with rings too--see my gallery for what it looked like.
Thanks for the info. Right now it runs pretty good, its only the pushing oil problem that bothers me. Do you know about how long I can drive it like this? Or how much it would cost for a re-build?
well you could possible run for another 100K depending on how bad it is. What you will notice is a decline in engine performance over time and an increase in the use of oil...with more and more coming out of the air filter. It really just depends on how bad of condition your engine is.
The cost of a rebuild is dependent on who is doing it and what they are doing. If you were to do it yourself, you could probably get the block done for $300-$400 and get a cast piston rebuild kit for $300, plus 100 - $200 for the heads. If you have someone rebuild it for you, it can range from $800 to $3,000.
Many people replace the engine with a remanufactured one which runs from $1000 - $1500 for the engine alone...but it comes with a warrant of some sort.
You have a lot of options, can you do the work yourself? you would save lots.
