Control Trac issues
MY '97 Ford Explorer Control Trac is engaging 4x4 at low speeds and when I am turning hard one way or the other. Can I take off my front Drive Shaft and drive it like that until I can afford to take it in? Thanks

I have done it for several thousand miles on my 97 with no problems. I suggest you drain the oil in the transfer case and refill. I had that problem when I bought mine. Only a pint of nasty fluid came out instead of 1 3/4 quarts. When low on fluid, the clutch grabbs at low speeds. Transfer cases are highly ignored. Mine had a leaking rear seal and all signs of a leak had been washed away (till it was refilled). Good news is two yars later I am still trouble free. If lights are flashing you will need to disconnect the battery to reset.

Hard to tell. I usually drive around with with the electric clutch swithed off (brown wire). This mod disables AUTO 4WD. My last 2K trip averaged 19.6 mpg. Can't give a good reason why I do it other than it saves chain stretching. 2WD LOW is neat.
A word of caution on driveshaft removal. You need to strike the center section of the CV at the transfer case with a chisel and hammer to free it. The CV will then come off as an assembly. It is posible to pull apart the CV apart and not so easy to get it back together. It is recommended that you mark both ends with paint to insure they are reinstalled in the same position for best wear.

Read addition to my last post. On the transfer case there is a single brown wire that feeds into the back of the case. This is the clutch. This isn't such a bad place to cut it since if you ever have to remove the motor assembly most people cut it there because they don't have the tool to remove the pin from the connector. I use waterproof push in connectors. Wire can also be found under the seat or by removing trim cover under the door.

Well I had the transfer case oil changed yesterday as well as both differientials for $70.00 Since then I have had no problems, I guess only time will tell. The transfer case was low on oil. Thanks again for your help. TM

If the switch says AUTO 4WD then the front wheels are engaged by applying power to the clutch magnet. 99% of the time you are not powering the clutch and this switch prevents those other times. No lights will flash. You will loose this auto safety feature on wet pavement and sandy conditions so you better be prepared for it. This is a concern for others who may drive the vehicle. There is a large thread on this at www.explorer4x4.com titles something like "If your 4WD switch looks like this."
