i am helping my dad troubleshoot his engine problem. he parked the truck at nite, wouldn't start the next morning. he replaced just about everything to do with spark and says he's getting spark. everything i've researched suggests it's a fuel problem. so, looking to find out where the fuel pump circuit breaker is located on a 1990 F150 302 5.0L engine. and, where is the fuel filter located.
if there is a suggested order as to what should be checked first, please include in reply. here is the list of suggestions i have come up with from my research: a. fuel pump circuit breaker/shut-off switch. b. replace fuel filter c. fuel pump relay. d. fuse for fuel pump. e. lastly, the pcm.
pardon me if anything stated is an oxymoron; for i am a girl.
When the key is turned on, do you hear a hum, as the pump comes up to pressure? The Pump relay is in the power distribution box under the hood, on the L. hand side of the engine bay, on the wheel well cover. I think it should be the second one. The fuse panel is above the driver's left foot, not sure of which fuse it is. There are some fuses in the dist. box, it might be there too. If those prove out, and the pump doesn't come on still, it could be the pump (dual tanks, both don't work? If so, the pump(s) are probably ok)
he does not hear a hum when the key is turned on. he also said that the truck has dual tanks but he disconnected one of them a couple of years ago because it was leaking.
ummm...trying to keep up here...so, is the inertia cut off switch for the fuel pump different from the fuel pump circuit breaker and different from the fuel pump relay. switches, fuses, relays...aye aye aye aye aye. (i think there should be one term for one part, imho). what is the part called that has a reset switch on it that cuts off the fuel in case of an accident; and where is it located?
once again, sorry for my ignorance. but this stuff is foreign to me.
okay...it's not the shut off switch. pushed the reset button, and still nothing. would the next thing to check be the fuel filter? and, this probably sounds really stupid but...where is it located exaclty?
a friend had a problem once in which the inertia/fuel cutoff switch was bad. Jumping the wires (bypassing) it found the answer to the fuel pump not working. this could also totally eliminate this for your problem.......
as for the switch unplug wires and reconect. my guess is the fuel pump is bad (no sound) best way to check is fuel pressure guage (screws onto the fuel rail)
thanks everyone for all the suggestions. i've passed them all along to my dad and he has to pick up a few tools and parts first. he won't be working on the truck until monday nite. so hopefully i can post what the problem was by tuesday.
just a side note, one basic thing that i suppose many of you guys know about but is not common knowledge to the layman: as he was going along tweaking and tuning different things he thought it could be, he would stand in front of the truck, instead of getting in it, and try to start it with his remote. apparently, a properly installed remote will not allow you to remotely start the vehicle with the hood open. live and learn i guess. starting it at the ignition didn't fix the problem anyway but it sure would be nice to know this kind of stuff just in case he had fixed it and didn't even know it.
sorry for the delay to post. here was the problem and pardon me if i don't get the terminology quite right. apparently, the wire that goes from some box under the fender to the module to the pick-up coil was loose and/or broke and was corroded...green on the end of the wire. once the dad fixed that, the truck is running just fine.
i have to say thank you to all of you who responded to my post. your input is appreciated more than you guys probably know.
so until next time, have a great day and a safe year.
