I would guess a leak at/near the radiator, thats one place were you would have coolant (green) and red (tranny) fluids. The overheating could be overheating the tranny fluid and causing tranny problems. Also if the leak is in the cooler you could be getting coolant into the tranny which will kill it. Get the leaks fixed and check the tranny fluid for coolant and coolant for tranny fluid. Then then see if it still overheats. If it does then change the thermostat. If your still having problems let us know.
Do a real good tune-up, if that doesn't do it shoot it put its out of its misery, lol just kidding if its worth savaging when it can be worth saving. Ask your self, is it worth saving by sending $$$ on it or buying other one?
I used to have a 35 year old truck that just kelp on running and I said to my self when the truck breaks down I will get other one but the truck ever broke down it just got to ugly to drive. Now I own a nice 93 Ranger XL 4.0L and people don't throw rocks at me now.
