here is what i did i took the 300 out of my 88 f150 and put in a 1990 5.8l and after getting it started it has a bad backfire out the rightside at idle and a loud popping backfire out the leftside when on the throttle. the only thing not hooked up is the oxygen sensor. it also lopes like i put put a cam in it but i didn't it don't think it has cam and i don't think it is out of time but i havenot checked.
any help would be greatly appreciated
everything checked out ok but it now does not even run on all 8 so is there anything else that could be bad or wrong possibly the coil or somthing i,m at a loss on this thing
please read and post any help
would i have to change anything electronic like the comoputer or get a chip to run the 5.8 because i havent done anything at all like that.
the 88 f150300 had differnt wires than the 5.8 which had four round plugs white black brown and grey. so i checked my 89 f150 parts truck that had a 300 in it and it had the same plugs as the 5.8 so i changed the harness from the firewall to the battery and from the firewall to the tailights. any thing else i need to do to the wiring. i had the the motor running but never to good not on all 8. does the computer need to be reprogrammed if so how do i do that.
i really need to get this truck running it is all i have to drive.
Are you running the computer from the 300? If you are, then that is your problem. Get a computer for a 351 and one that is for the transmission in your truck.

I agree with EPNCSU2006. Everytime you swap a different engine, you must swap the computer as well.
^ Good point. Check a wiring diagram to see what all is different in the harness. The injector harness is definitely different, other stuff should be very similar.
thank you i will try to find a computer for it.
will the computer out of 1995 f150 5.8 work or do i need one from an 87-92 f150?
it is a 4spd manual trans does that mean id need a computer for the 5.8 with a 4 spd manual trans also or will one fom an automatic work for me?
I am not an expert on swaps but I would think the computer's timing and fuel mapping would be different on an auto vs. manual. Also the 95 computer for an auto would be looking for the E4OD I believe. The auto computer would have outputs for the torque converter clutch, shift solenoids, etc. It may have inputs sensing transmission status. I would find one from a vehicle with the same transmission and engine, same year if possible. Get the harnesses between the computer and engine/transmission while your at it.

i got the computer from napa for $112. now the truck runs good no misses or anthing. but it has no power it will not accelerate at all (slower than 55mph in a 1/4 mile) it will not burn the tires at all. shouldn't a regular cab short box 351 4 spd with a k&n replacment filter and pace setter shorty headers with 3 inch cat back dual exhaust be able to break the tires loose on wet blacktop. do i need a chip because of the exhaust and the headers.
