Explorer not good at exploring

I had my mom's 03 Explorer XLT out in some mud and trails today just for the heck of it. The thing has no ground clearance!!! Afterwards I changed the oil and could see handfulls of debris covering the transmission cooler. What a convenient location! Right where it can collect all the mud.

You were probably looking at the power steering cooler. The trans cooler is located between the radiator and the condenser.
The vehicle needs more agressive tires for doing some decent off roading.
