My 2000 explorer has been giving me trouble lately. On cold mornings it starts right up and hold a high idle for 2-3 seconds and then drops down and starts running terribly. It will usaully die if you don't keep after it. This will go on for a minute or two untill it warms up a bit. The check engine light has been coming on also, and the code it is showing is a "lean fuel mixture". Changed fuel filter, had fuel pressure checked out and it checked out ok. Cleaned the idle control. Just lately I took it to a mech. and he said I needed a "mass air flow sensor"??( right on the tube coming out of the air filter box). That ended up being 150.00 bucks for nothing. Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated! thanks
I had the same problem (and codes, lean bank 1, lean bank 2, multiple misfires) with my 4.0 SOHC. They replaced the IAC and the intake manifold O rings. The choke kicks in like it should now when the engine is cold. I also tried cleaning my IAC and it didn't help. Replace that thing and your problem will disappear. Good luck.
The IAC is the "idle air control valve". The IAC controls the flow of air/fuel into the engine when the main butterfly valve is completely closed (accelerator not being depressed in any way/engine at idle). If your IAC is faulty as mine was, it will remain in the low idle setting and not adjust for low temperature starts and increased load.
The IAC is located on top of the intake manifold (beneath the plastic cover). It is held in by two bolts, is cylindrical in shape, and has a set of wires connected to it. See the sticky at the top of this forum and you'll get a good idea of what I'm talking about.
Some folks have tried to clean their IACs (including me) with carb cleaner. For some, this works for a while. It did not work for me and everyone will eventually have to replace it at some time in the life of their truck. Its best to get it out of the way and buy a new IAC. You can find one at most auto parts stores for about $70. I hope this helps. Definitely go to the IAC repair help sticky on top of this forum. Good luck!
I really thank you all for the help. That sounds like the next thing I'm going to check. One more comment though, When the explorer is running rough on startup, I can unplug the mass air flow sensor and the engine smooths right out. I replaced that sensor and it still does the same thing. Does this change anything???
