hello all - I have a '78 f350 460 auto. Got it from a friend and knew in advance it had trans problems. I have the engine running great now, so it's on to the trans prob. Was told it would go in reverse no prob, and only sometimes in forward. I got the engine running good - banged into reverse just fine - and forward did nothing. After shifting back and forth a few times, here's my current deal: When it's in park, the engine revs seemingly like the trans is in gear, ie. won't rev freely. Truck won't roll, it IS in park. I can drive in reverse and forward, but when I give it gas, it clunks/bangs very hard and moves, then acts like a brake - so I get a bang/move/brake, bang/move/brake etc. - all the while I'm not on the brakes and I'm steady on the throttle. I know my around a vehicle EXCEPT for an automatic, so I'm perplexed. I haven't been running it very much, just enough to try and get a diagnosis. I'd get it rebuilt (by me, first time trying) but then I'm not so sure it wouldn't be the torque converter.
Any help is sincerely appreciated.

It sounds like the one way clutch and Some other things. Needs to be rebuilt or just get a used one and stick in there. If the one way clutch is not working then all the gears are trying to fight each other when you try to go forward.
I got my C-6 rebuilt in 1998, down in Louisiana. It cost me $750. That included a better sprag and a transmission cooler. It has about 5,000 miles since rebuild and I've had no troubles with it. It does a good job but someday I hope to replace it with a 5-speed.
Thanks for the replies - sorry I haven't been in a while - computer probs. On the last reply - could in fact the torque converter cause some/all of the problems listed? I wouldn't mind tackling the tranny rebuild myself, but I'd hate to do all that and still have the problems - and wonder then if I did it right, or is it the TC. $100 for a rebuild kit is fine, but it's another $100 or more for a TC. Thanks again in advance,
Mike
