Angry What the

99 Ranger 2wd
3.0l 56,000 miles
This is my first newer model Ford and possibly my last. I would consider the mileage to be low, but of late, I've had the serpentine tensioner arm go bad, the ABS brake system is out and now my speedometer no longer works when under 25 mph, this also includes the odometer as well. Not to mention the need to run the high octane gas to stop the engine knock!
Are these normal problems! I don't know wether to deal with these issues and have them fixed or I'm wondering is this just the tip of the iceberg of problems to come.
Any one else encountered these things?

Sounds like a lemon. Are you sure the dealership didn't sell you a vehicle that used to be a lease vehicle?

I bought it used @ 46000 miles, appeared to be in good condition and well looked after but now all is going.

the knock is supposedly a common problem with the 3.0l engine, the speedometer/ abs thing is due to a bad vehicle speed sensor on the top of your differential, (or is his too new for that, someone help me out here). I think i've heard of all of the problems your having, they seem to be pretty common, but usually its one or the other, not all problems on one truck

I believe they're too stingy for that one, at least everyone says when they change theirs, "i got mine at autozone for about 15 bucks" or "I got mine at napa for 20 bucks" so it sounds like they're paying for them. Do a search on brake lights, or abs lights, you'll find some more info there also

The tesioner is a common problem.

The ABS, speedometer & odometer are all due to the VSS on the rear, if you have an auto it might cause odd shifting to, easy fix.

There is a TSB on the pinging problem, the coil is not covered by the emissions warranty but the PCM is.

Sometimes bad luck happens to good people. Fortunately none of your problems are too serious. The belt tensioner is fairly inexpensive and easy to replace; ditto on the VSS on top of the rear axle. Pull the codes on the ABS and see what ya get. If a new VSS is needed, check the wiring and the connection on the VSS for condition during the course of installation of the new VSS. It is VERY simple to replace. The engine knock is a common problem; do a search in here and see how others have dealt with it. I've got the 4.0 so I can't advise ya any further. I'd need more info on exactly what the speedo is doing under 25MPH; is the needle dancing or does is simply not reading anything?

BTW, I think the VSS runs the computer, cruise, ABS and digtial odometer; does your odometer not record mileage at any speed? Do you have a digital odometer?

below 25mph, the speedo is dead, no movement, also no odometer movement. Once I pass 25-28mph, speedo and odometer start working. Odometer is not digital.
What do you mean by "pull the codes on the ABS"?

thanks!

The ABS will store fault codes. By pulling (retreiving) them, the code stears you in the direction of the problem. I'm not sure how to pull them on your model year Ranger. Some local auto supply stores will do it for free. On the other hand, perhaps a reader here will know the trick; it's usually pretty easy.

As for the speedo, I'd disconnect the cable at the tranny, remove the drive gear from the tranny and inspect the gear for damage. Pay attention to the plastic gear teeth as well as the square portion of the drive gear that engages with the speedo cable.

ususally when you get the brake light and the speedo problem, its caused by the vehicle speed sensor on the top of the rear differential, replace it, or even give the connections a good cleaning and see what happens, I have 5 bucks that says replacing it will solve the brake light/ speedo problem

I have a 99 3.0 flexfuel with 108000 miles, I just got the abs light. As far as the ping, It's been there since day one unless I run mid grade gas. I have a fairly complex dtc tester and nothing shows up about the abs.

I also have the check engine lit with a dtc of 401 and have passed NJ inspection twice with the light lit!

Check out the tech info post on pulling the RABS codes.

The PCM might not pickup the RABS code since thats a seperate module.

Thumbs up

I have the Identical problem with my 99 ranger XLT, 2.5l, auto, 2WD.

The abs light is on full time but the abs itself is out, and between 20-28 is when the speedo/odometer comes on and with the auto i get a THUNK/Hard shift from 1st to 2nd gear. If i take off from the line faster, the shifting is not as severe, but in rush hour traffic (between 10-30 mph all the time) it is really a pain in the butt.

I called autozone and napa here in KC and they said it was a dealer part, so i ordered it on-line from www.parts.com and it cost me $17.04 plus shipping. Got it yesterday and am putting it on this weekend

problem will be fixed, the chatroom on this sight is awesome, try it

Good luck with yours

Michael
