Another Tymar Question

Recently put Tymar on. Hate the noises. Do all open element systems (AFE, K&N, ETC.) make these irritating sounds--my biggest peeve is when it sounds like a semi letting off his air brakes when I shift into OD. On very light throttle it just sounds like a WHOOSH when it shifts and that is okay, but the air brake sounds and the flutter are something I can do without. Dale said he will take it back if I am not happy with it, so I was thinking of getting rid of it and trading it back to him for something else he has of equal value and then buying a different deal...Any recommendations?

Beats me, Ive ran a Tymar for a few years now and I dont have the noise your talking about. Just hear the turbo whine more But I love that sound. Are you sure its the Tymar making the sound and not your Exhaust? Is this with the windows up? I dont hear the whine at all with the windows up.

Yes, in fact the oiled gauze open elements are a good bit louder than the big paper one.

If you've already installed your wicked wheel I'm sure you have noticed that it has become louder still.

Nothing you can do about it short of putting the stock airbox, or something similar, back on.

I was under the impression that the wicked wheel was used to correct this problem?

Dale told me its just turbo stall/surge and that a new compressor wheel/shroud would take care of it...? Cookie--do you get these noises I am talking about? If anything I get LESS turbo whine with the Tymar...I get more flutter and strange noises though, you can tell they are coming through the filter/intake assembly not the exhaust because it is straight in front of me where the filter sits, and a tick off to the left.

If it was just the WHOOSH noise it wouldnt bother me, but the air brakes sounding noise irritates me when it shifts into OD. It also does it at hard acceleration with a trailer behind me when I am in OD.
Cookie what were your thoughts regarding my other post about the Mobil 1 15w50 oil on sale?

Thanks,

Matt

Yeah it is with the windows up--it's damn cold in Northern IL in December!

Oh- ok. I misinterpeted your post.

Yes, the wicked wheel will take care of the surge in any normal circumstance. I still get a slight surge when very loaded, like dragging 11K up a 6% grade, and even then the wheel has moved the compressor map up far enough that it dosen't happen until I'm pushing 30 psi. In all I'm quite satisfied with the wheel. Definately worth $89 and three hours out of my day.

The tradeoff for curing the surge is that the normal "whine" of the turbo spooling up is much louder than the stock wheel. I love, it sounds just plain mean, but some folks grow weary of the incessant whistle (not a problem in northern IL in December).

Cookie what were your thoughts regarding my other post about the Mobil 1 15w50 oil on sale?
I haven't seen the bottle, but if that CH-4 rating isn't there then it's not a diesel oil, no matter if it says it works or not. Personally I would not run it in mine. If I were going to a full synthetic I'd go with the Delvac 1. Rotella synthetic is a synthetic blend, that's why it costs so much less.

I wouldn't mine the extra whistle on the new wheel--I wish mine had more turbo whistle to it, it's pretty tame unless I have 10-15000 behind me on some good hills....

Wicked Wheel it is then...are these really just the stock wheels off the pre 99 PSDs? My biggest concern is balancing the wheel if I do it myself but apparently no one seems too worried about it. Also, what kind of wrench/tool is needed to get on that nut that you need to grab onto to turn the stock wheel off/tighten the new wheel? Was looking at my brother's turbo off his Grand National tonight and realized I don't have anything that'll work on that "starburst" fastener....

Well....Bob Riley says they are different, but they do look very similar, so, I dunno.

Sure you do, down south we call it a socket and ratchet .

Your turbo dosen't have a starburst. I don't remember now what size it was, but it was just a plain old deep well socket. I was suprised by how little pressure it took to break it loose, just held onto the hot side wheel with a leather gloved hand. You don't really have to worry about the retorque on the new wheel as the rotation of the turbo makes it self torqueing (sp), just get it snug and reassemble.
