Exclamation Would you do it? HELP!!!

Well, it seems to me, that my Mustang headers are going to be a little closer than I thought to the steering column...

Now I can either, A) buy some Sanderson headers (or is there any other good quality huggers?) like some FF4's or B) would it be ok if I slapped the header on to an extra set of heads that I have, heat up the lower part of the header and push it more towards the block? Or is something like this strongly NOT recommended?

Someone please help

Here's a pic for you guys!

You could, I've done it before. If you decide to try it, make sure you have a good gasket installed and torqued. I assume your headers have individual flanges and not a single solid flange all the way across the head mating surface? The tubes will want to squirm when you tweak it. You may be fine forever or it may be real tough to reinstall someday.

Looks like the column could have been a little shorter?

are they jet coated ???

are your headers coated ??? I've got a question... what will the torch heat do to the coating ??? I realize that exhaust temps get high... but the heat isn't concentrated in that small area... something to think about... where did you buy them...???

I swapped three sets of Sandersons before I got a set that would work with the 460... I'm running the left side from one set and the right side from another... God help me if I ever have a problem !!

The headers were already coated from the factory with HTS coating. I recoated them with POR-20. Apparently POR-20 is crap. So I was planning on doing a ceramic coating to them once my exhaust was done. The headers have a individual flange for each port.

Do you guys think I might be better off getting some Sanderson FF4's? I can probably get close to what I paid for if I sell the ones I have now if I sell them, they're brand new.

I thought they were stock Ford shorties. If you can sell them you probably should. Like I said, it can be done, but it's a little tricky. You need to heat them fairly uniform for a good tweak. They really need to be bolted to a head while you are doing it or you'll trash them. Won't be easy if you don't have a spare set of heads so you can do it on the bench.

John

You still had to run 2 sets of headers with the MII?. I'm glad I don't have your luck with exhaust. Have you given any thought to just putting a complete exhaust ssytem on jigs and just fabbing a truck around it?

They are MAC Shorties, not stock.

I think I'll sell them. If I heat them up and move them, and it works well great, but if it doesnt....damn, I'm out a couple hundred bucks, plus new headers.

I think I'll order some FF4's

Cool

Hi, Joners; Before you get to excited about the headers, would it be possible to shorted or move the steering column? I may be wrong, but from your photo it looks like that is the problem. If it ends up that you have to do something with the headers I think I would try to sell them first. If you bend them and it doesn't work you are out the purchase price and still don't have headers that work. Good luck Ozzie

I can only move the steering column left or right, which would mean it wouldnt be straight in the cab and look really bad. I can't move it front or back beacuse it will still hit the header.

It that were mine, I'd try to angle the steering column away slightly. I'd also look to see if the engine could be offset slightly. That looks real close to clearing the headers.

I don't want to angle the steering column, then it wont look straight, and feel straight. I think I have a buyer for the headers anyways!
