I own a 1982 f-150 with a 302 and a 4-speed manual. my question is, are there any longtube headers to fit my application? If not, what would be a good shorty choice? any info would be appreciated.
I am guessing you have been looking around, and they all say "except with manual transmission"? Unless you have modified your motor some, headers are more of a pain than they are worth. You will get good sound if you take it to the muffler shop, and get them to split the y-pipe and run duals.
Be careful if you have inspections though. And you might have to set the timing back a little and put a 180 degree thermostat in the engine if you have the stock carb. I ran into this when I put headers on my automatic.
I only went to headers because I didn't have the correct truck manifolds and y-pipe for the 351w. The manifolds and y-pipe would have been a little over $200.00, and the headers where around $115.00.
About the egr thing. I found out the egr not only works on vacuum, but it also has a little metal diaphram inside that is regulated by exhaust backpressure. When I changed my exhaust, I noticed it would ping badly after running on the interstate. That's when I noticed the egr wasn't working, and after tearing it apart, figured out since I lessened the backpressure, the diaphram in the egr would not work right.
I ended up putting cooler plugs, putting larger jets in the carb, and putting a 180 degree thermostat in it before it would quit pinging.
If you put a little aftermarket 4bbl on it, you can skip all that egr mess.
im currently in the process of swapping out heads and cam, and already have 4-bbl carb. all my emissions crap is also removed. i would just hate to lose power gained by the new stuff with stock manifolds
I know Flowtech has headers that will fit your truck but I think they would be shorty or block hugger style. Also I think 82s still used the mechanical clutch linkage, so long tube headers would not be able to clear the linkage. However if you feel up to it, you might be able to convert to the newer hydraulic clutch system, I think then you could run long tube headers.
