With the tailgate down the sides of the bed will flex. Over time this has a detremental effect on the bed support structures
The tailgate acts as a cross member for the sides of the bed
I have seen many older trucks with no tailgates and the sides of the bed actually flop back and forth like cardboard.
I think that this is why you dont see many "Tailgator Nets "
anymore and most of the flow thru designs are made from bar stock to support the sidewalls of the bed
