I was snooping around on eBay and found this.I thought that I'd ask you guys if it would be worth $100 or not.I need to at least lock up the 7.5" in my 1992 Ranger and this looks like it has a 4.10 Gear Ratio to go with it.What do you guys think? It's used, but it looks like it's in great shape.Plus,it's cheaper than getting a Posi 8.8" from the pick n' pull.
Does anyone know the correct process from start to finish on how to install one of these things? That's the only thing that I have to worry about now lol.
I tend to agree with tominator. The BASICS aren't too difficult, BUT, there is great precision required. You definitely want the help of someone who HAS done this before, and DOES KNOW FOR SURE what they are doing.
Thanks for the input ya'll.I'm going to probably end up winning the bid on the gears and I'll get my cousin to help me install them.He races dirt track cars and this is something that he does all of the time.It especially helps since he runs Ford's .
Thanks Peter.I've got my bid in.Hopefully I'll get it.Everything looks good to me.But,my only problem is that I don't know where to start on installing one of these things.I've asked my cousin and he agreed to help me install it.Besides the items that come in the link in my 1st post,is there anything else that I'll need to pick up somwhere to complete the installation if everything else in the case is in good shape?Like some C-Clips or something?I know that I'll have to get a tube of gasket silicone and some new gear oil. But,besides that?
I know that what I bought is a Ford OEM Traction-Loc with either the original or aftermarket 4.10 gears on it.But,is this the same thing as a true locker or a spool? After my days in the high-performance world,a spool locks both of the rear wheels, putting 100% of the engine's power to each one.Of course, this application will really mess you up on the street. Will this Traction-Loc that I'm bidding on do the same thing?I think that they lock both wheels, but the wheels don't get 100% of the power at the same time.Is this correct?
I crawled under my Ranger last night and looked at the tag on my differential.I have comfirmed that I have a 7.5" rear end.
Also, over to the left of where it had "7.5",there was 3.45.Is that my original gear ratio?I should be able to tell a BIG difference between a 3.45 and a 4.10,shouldn't I?It's pretty bad when you can hit 60mph in 4th gear @ 3,500 RPM.Also,it's a big pain to get started off.
I've got the tip on how to calibrate my speedometer after I have the locker and gears installed.I did the test yesterday. My truck will hit 60mph in 5th gear @ 1,900 RPM.
Well,I couldn't get away from my girlfriend for long enough to come back to eBay at midnight to check the auction. So,I lost the bid .Oh well...There's another one on there which seems to be the same thing. It's at $70 right now.It also has the 4.10 gears on it.
If I win this locker, what will I need to pick up at the parts store to install it?Some new c-clips or anything like that?
sorry nightrain, i'm not at all familiar with putting these things on, all i know that a new track-lok is expensive (at least for me). I also know that it acts as an open end untill you loose traction, not sure about 100% of power equally on both wheels, you think there would be a little slip, but again i'm not really sure on this matter. Just remember, take lots of pictures so you can show other people how to do it
Thanks Pete.No problem.I'm not experienced with these things either lol.I just hope that if and when I get one,it won't be a total, royal pain to install and hopefully the end result will be MUCH better than the previous situation.
Things are always easier the 2nd time around, so when i buy a track lok, you can come over and install mine for me, actually i love installing stuff and putting stuff on the truck, thats half the reason i buy things for it, to install them.
