i was just thinking a little, now it you spool your front, i mind you this is if you are a mudder...strictly...so, you spool the front, when you are not locked it doesnt matter what is going on up there, you lock it in and your straight line it awesome, even if you stay in real loose dirty, slippery mud, you are ok when turning, and then when you are done you just disengage. adn unlock you hubs...eh??...what you think...its cheaper that a locker....even though those EZ-Lockers are looking mighty good to me about now....i hope they go down even lower in price by summer......also, thinking about physics right now, wouldnt it be more efficeint to put a locker in the front instead of the back....it is more efficient to pull a vehicle than push it, and plus you have all that motor weight up there too....
Here is the skinny on the fnt being locked. If you have Manual Hubs, you can do it. You need the ability of unlocking the wheels from the axle totally if you even think of driving on pavement. You cant just unlock one side or you will experience what drive-line-drag-induced-bump-steer is all about (i used that term very loosely)! It will pull your wheel way over to the right or left, depending on which (Fnt) wheel is locked in while driving down the road. You cant leave them locked in if you want to have a turning radius less then the circumference of the moon while on pavement. On dirt it is about 65% less noticeable. Its very drivable but you will have to make more 3 point turns then otherwise. I would suggest some sort of AGR Hydro assist with it since your steering gets harder to turn. Feels very heavy. BUT for straight lines, its great. Climbing....WOW! Breaking axle shafts.....better stock up on stub shafts, u-joints and outers now! Or talk to a bud that works at a Cryo treating facility to get your new Moly axles and billet u-joints done. You have to give a little to get a little. This case holds true to that phrase. I say do it, its not half as bad as you may thing. BUT let me tell you this, if i had the money, i would get a locker of some type. My 2 copper thingies.......

i have a arb air locker in the front and with it engaged it works like a spool. even in snow or sand my truck does not turn at all, if you are mud racing in a straight line i would not go with a spool, but if you want to turn i would try a limeted slip thats just my 2 cents
i am about to try this myself, i'll let ya know what I think in a week....ask 85351ho...he's done it and hasn't had many problems with it other than enagaging/disengaging the front hubs.
I don't know about a spool . . . I'm trying to decide whether or not to put an EZ Locker (or Aussie) but I have an EZ in the fronto of my Bronco after I get the Eaton ELocker installed in the rear. Its running about 50/50 on steering and axle/joint breakage. . . I guess I could put it in and if I don't like it . . . take it out.
Yea, that why I usually recomend a locker up front...you can turn a hell of allot easier. If you drive on road during icy conditions and want 4x4 then better to save up for an arb to get the best of both worlds. Detroits are fine for me.
Originally posted by tellico racing I have a spool in the front of my mud truck. I would reccomend it for straight line mudbogging.......but nothing else, it is just too hard to turn.
the trick is to only lock one hub and then when you get in some serious stuff lock the other...with just one locked you can turn a helluva lot better and still get plenty of traction.
Originally posted by proeliator Yea, but thats a pita and not really realistic though. I'd be hopping in and out of the crap all day.
And yea, you DO want a spool for straight line mud bogging/dragging. Maybe that was a typo?
you'd be surprised man....when Chris (85351ho) and I head out to the mud hole he just locks one hub until we find a serious hole...you'd be surprised what one hub will do for ya! I have watched him do this for a couple of months and have been impressed! Plus, I need the exercise , hehe!
Yea, but I've got too long of a drop to be getting in and out of my cab One of my buddies always tells me he's gonna get a nosebleed whenever he rides shotgun

Don't laugh....my wife has to use a step ladder to get in and has been pestering me to put in one of those steps that automatically drop down and out, and then retract back up. Like what they have on some RVs. It'll be a cold day in hell....
