i am sending my leaf springs to the shop tomarrow and was woundering what the pros and cons were to re-arching my leaf springs. it is cheaper if i just add a few leafs and i can get the same lift i am looking for. basically why should i re-arch my leaf springs and how long would they last? or do they just sag right back???
I have had springs re-arched and have had good service from them. The people that arch the springs have to be good at it and know what they are looking for when they do it. You can only get a few inches of lift due to the change in length of the springs.
I had my rear leafs rearched and after I took out a 3" lift block from the back of the truck it ended up the same height as before. Not what I was looking for but now it's probably more like it was new. The leafs were almost flat before.
Reaching worked good for me. At one time I had an thick extra leaf added in for the overhead camper. Worked excellent with camper on. Rough as a cob with it off. I use air bags now when I need extra support.
I had mine re-arched a couple years ago, they also added a leaf. The shop owner told me that without the new leaf in, the springs would sag back to old in a short time. Didn't bother me because it cost basically the same either way.
One leaf will not make a difference in how fast they sag since it is only part of the entire spring. The guys that do this for a living look the spring leafs over carefully and the one I go to won't even consider re-arching a pack with more than one leaf cracked. He says it is replacement time then. He gives each leaf a good look see with a practiced eye. It is interesting to watch him work, a real craftsman
