Within the next 600 miles I plan on removing the engine to replace the oil pan. My question is that once the engine is removed is there any preventive maint. or any thing I should address once it is out? The truck is a 1997f250 with 36000 miles. All my fluids and filters are up to date. Thanks for any input.
i would clean the engine throughly , top & bottom, drive it for a couple hundred before pulling it, that way you will see any oil/coolant leaks, Dont use any acid based cleaners! might hurt some sensors, dawn soap work great, also look at the exhaust studs & nuts presoak with pb blaster, beprepared to replace them.
do yourself a favor and do a engine clean the day before you pull it, world of difference when you get it out and begin to work on it, used to work on large semi's and dump trucks, wouldn't come in my shop till they got steam cleaned first.
if you have acsess to a lift , my friend manages and high qauility paint and body shop and did a frame off rebuild on a 2001 f250 because it was bent badly in a wreck to the piont it needed to be replaced. he removed the bed and disconnected all the wiring and hoses, fuel tank filler so on and so forth, and raised the cab in the air above the engine and frame and had total acsess to everything, if he gets another i'll take some pitchures. dont try this unless your well expreinced, hes a wizard when it comes to this kind of stuff, probaly because he did his first frame off when he was fourteen.
Thanks for the input, The Ford dealer will be doing this work because it is still under warranty, I am limited in the cosmetic dept. because of that, besides my truck is in very nice shape for the year. I am more concearned with the engine, tranny etc.. I am doing this because of surface rust and blisttering on the oil pan. I was told this is common in my area because of the use of road salts and the poor quality of paint used on the oil pan. Funny thing is every time I would wash the truck, I made sure to do the undercarrige with a pressure washer. I would hate to see what it would have looked like if I didnt.
