Yes, home of the Reagan and Nixon libraries. The state with the greatest number of people without health insurance, bastion of socialism.

In order to be the world fifth largest economy, underwriting half the rest of the nation I might add, it would seem we'd have to be "dyed in the wool" capitalists.

btw many in law enforcement support licenses for illegals. They'd prefer you had some sort of ID as opposed to none. The issue is far from decided with the arrival of Arnie.

As far as multi-lingual ballots, I am personally against it but I can see the reasoning behind it. English fluency is not a requirement for residency or citizenship so defending Engish only ballots in court would be futile.

How did we manage to shoot for China and hit California in this thread? I lived in eight states the first ten years I was married and traveled to many others. I found things I liked (and disliked) in all of them. Every one should visit NYC, DC, Boston, Chicago and Phille - great cities. Cleveland (where I married my Texas girl) and Detroit (with the exception of H. Ford's place up the road) were easy to leave. I enjoyed a stay in Phoenix but it was hotter than a two-dollar pistol. Southern Cal is a great place to visit ( I resisted opps to stay), a car/truck lovers mecca. Northern Cal is beautiful and San Fran is an experience all should have. Louisana has some of the nicest people I ever met, southern Florida has been annexed by Cuba and retirees from New Jersey. Arkansas is beautiful and full of friendly people (if you can forgive them for giving us Clinton). Texas still has room enough to allow escape from the cities. I've never been to Alaska but it is on my "must see" list. Sorry about the travelog, just wanted to point out that we are all parts of the mosaic called the U.S.

Dono,
To answer the first question asked in the post immediately preceeding this one:
"I do not know how. But, I am glad that for once Alabama is not the state being beat up on!"

Now, is that greatest number of legal residents w/o healthcare or greatest number of illegal aliens w/o healthcare? Most non-socialist states don't give free healthcare to illegals.

In order to be the world fifth largest economy, underwriting half the rest of the nation I might add, it would seem we'd have to be "dyed in the wool" capitalists.

Very true, but they're a small minority in California.

btw many in law enforcement support licenses for illegals. They'd prefer you had some sort of ID as opposed to none. The issue is far from decided with the arrival of Arnie.

Are they the same law enforcement officiers that think citizens souldn't be alowed to own handguns? Wouldn't a thinking cop, after having stopped an undocumented illegal call INS and have them deported rather than wanting to see if they paid their $20 for a driver's license?

As far as multi-lingual ballots, I am personally against it but I can see the reasoning behind it. English fluency is not a requirement for residency or citizenship so defending Engish only ballots in court would be futile.

But, it's the acceptance of such folly by states like California that legimizes the practice and makes it impossible for anyone else to stop the practice. California liberalism sets legal precedences that the rest of the country doesn't want. It happens time and time again, from environmentalism to illegal immigrants to anti-smoking laws. The BS starts in CA and flows Eastward.

jpsartre12,

I don't pretend to know what the rest of the country does or doesn't want, do you? Do you think segregation would have ended were it up to the then residents of Alabama?(there you go BrianA)

California has the largest number of legal residents and citizens without healthcare coverage not counting illegal immigrants. I honestly don't know if undocumented residents can get medical treatment, I hope so.

How would a cop know they've pulled over an illegal alien by virtue of their not having a driver's license? They aren't deputized by INS anyway. In fact their ability to effectively police is reduced by any connection to INS real or perceived.

Certainly California sets trends both good and bad. Much of the rest of the country can delay addressing issues that California cannot. If the "California" precedence goes nationwide does that mean we were right or wrong?

Always fun talking with you btw.

One big difference between China and the US is patience. China tolerates a great deal of what what would quickly erupt US passions, generally taking the position of wait and see if there's not a long term benefit involved which will surface at a later date. Taiwan and Hong Kong are excellent examples of that patience.

China, primarily due to its current industrial revolution, is experiencing domestic economic and social problems not unlike those in the US. Unemployment and additional social service requirements are being created from the vast amounts of outside investment capital being virtually thown at it to improve automation and reduce operating costs. We should be so lucky.

I think it would take a direct act of aggression by either country to start a full-scale war. I'm not talking about flexing muscles with diverting our military information gathering planes or other such incidents, but an actual attack. And that would, due to the physical sizes of both countries and geographical distances, probably mean nuclear war. Let's be serious, how would we ever invade and occupy a country with a population of well over a billion people. What would that cost us to rebuild?

I don't think N. Korea is a problem for US - China relations. In fact China is applying some pressure to N. Korea to negotiate with the US on the nuclear programs.

For info on Taiwan click here. This is a long, but well written article on the US, Taiwan and the PRC(China). Taiwan never was and likely never will be a member of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation).

China has been building a "blue water" navy, expanding their submarine fleet, and aggresively pursuing newer missle technologies and a space program.

Article on PRC missiles.

Will the US and the PRC go to war anytime soon? I'd like to think not, but Taiwan would be the most likely trigger. Other than that our economies are to entertwined to start a war.

On the California thing. Do Californians have the "My Governor can beat up your Governor" bumper stickers left over from Minnesota yet?

Sinjin, Of course they do! They have the biggest population. Unless you are talking about percentages...

And as far as I am concerned, Georgedavila lives in God's country. Of all the places I have made my home, nevada is the best by leaps and bounds. Especially if you are into driving, fishing hunting hiking climbing, camping skiing (snow or water) or just being alone.

As far as China and the US goes, has anyone else out there read Tom Clancy's "The bear And The dragon?" It ends up in a war between us and PRC. His descriptions of the battle were so incredibly detailed, I had to read that part of tyhe book several times. And the US ended up kicking the crap out of the PRC!! (I know, I know, it is fiction, but entertaining as hell)

But China and the PRK (People's Republic of Kalifornia) are very relavent in the same thread.
1. A large amount of Chinese importation is done through California.
2. And just as Clinton was increasing the allowable amount of imports from China, they were cutting the number of inspectors to handle those shipments. That was a recipe for disaster, especially when one remembers China's threat to use nukes on the US.
3. Up until relatively recently, China's long-range nuclear warhead deployment limit was California. Now, with the help of the Clinton Admin and the seling of small warhead technology to the ChiComs,
all of the US can be targeted now.

china's population is 1.2 billion. u.s. population is 274 million. if it werent for nuclear weapons i think china would kick our ***. but because of nuclear weapons, i think that if the u.s. and china got into it, we would destroy each other. someone correct me if im wrong, but dont we have around 18 trident-class subs (nuclear) with 24 nuclear missiles the size of a city bus on each one? thats a comforting feeling to me. i saw on tv that our subs alone could completely destroy every major city in the northern hemisphere. just some cool facts to ponder with.

75% of the U.S. Agricultural production is from California. It would definately be a strategic target for the RED Chinese commies. Taiwan is our allies. There hasn't been an American Government with the cahoonas to admit it.
