Undercoating

Team,
Did a search for undercoating, only found one of relevance from wheelMA1; his advice is "have someone else do it". I tend to agree, so I checked at the local here and it was $175.
Have had the truck for almost 4 years (our anniversary is coming up, think I will take her out for a drive through the snow) and plan to keep her for a long time. Should I get the undercoat? If yes, how, who, and how much should it be? Plan on being in high snow (salt) areas if this helps form an opinion. Thanks in advance for the help.

Regards.

i know some guys in pennsylvania that use truck bed coating for undercoat. It works great and isnt all that expensive my father in law did his high-boy for about 50 bucks but he did it himself in the summer and had to let it sit for a couple of days to dry. Just make sure if you do it yourself you are careful of what you use some of the undercoating products never dry and act like grease when you try and clean them off

I can't predict what the 2000 models will look like 10 years from now, as far as rust is concerned. Hopefully, Ford continued what they have been doing since at least 1992..which is making sure their F150's don't rust away. I own a 1992 model and there is very little rust to be found on the body or chassis. I live in Pennsylvania and we have had our share of road salt. I have seen some serious damage on trucks a few yrs older than mine, (1985 to1989) and I thank God that my truck has survived basically rust free for 11 yrs.
Wasn't your truck undercoated by the dealer??

It will be difficult to do it yourself, the stuff is messy and it is hard to physically get under the vehicle. I think your best bet would be to "spot seal" areas around the wheel well and frame, most of the corrosion I can find on my 92 is on the frame under the bed. For instance, the spare tire bracket was messy, I sanded and repainted it.
The 175 price sounds pretty good. I would really look around until you find a shop that can give you references and show you an example of their craftsmenship. Personally, as an amateur mechanic, I think I can do a better job than a pro; I have the will and time to do the job right, whereas, most mechs and body guys are pressed for time and they might not care about your truck.

I just used a can of 3M undercoating yesterday, it seemed to spray on easily, dried fast, and looks good. But, only time will tell.
