Ijust upgraded my 65 Amp alternator to a 100 Amp with external regulator. It was really easy to do and I didn't have to rewire anything. It cost about $100.00 from standard battery company. I was told that this upgrade was better than the one wire set ups.

You can get a 100 amp in 1 wire

I have given some thought to doing what you did. I have an alternator from an '90 Escort and it sounds like mine and yours are the same. From what I figured out one wire is for an idiot light, one is for the alternator to "sense" voltage, and the last one is for output. The one I have is a sixty amp with worn brushes. It had a serpentine type six groove pulley that just happens to be the same length as the stock FE double groove pulley so I swapped them along with their respective fans. I haven't installed it yet because I need to know how to test the regulator, replacement reg's are $42.

Well, I don't know about yours
I don't know how to test a regulator
But mine is internal, and the fan is internal also
Best of luck, Im not sure what you want me to say. lol
But if you need any help feel free to ask
The way i tested mine...
I did it on the car before I took it off
I used a voltage meter and made myself a diagram

I know, but, I was not at West Marine and had to buy the cable from NAPA instead and they did not have crimpers at this store. I do not do enough cable to justify buying a $50+ set of crimpers.

Vise grips work also.
I've used those a lot for crimpers
I haven't ever paid 50 bucks for a set of crimpers tho.
I was just pickin on ya in a friendly way, I didnt mean any harm by it

ive found that if the shaft size is the same and it doesnt rub on the housing, whatever you need will usually work , good luck bob, about the testing of the voltage regulator , you can take it to 'napa' or any other shop and let them check it for free, or you can install it and test it yourself by checking you output with a volt meter , make sure youe battery is fully charged or you will fry a marginal alternator.

You can also test it by starting your truck and listening to the alternator.
Unplug it, if it whines then it's your voltage regulator
The whine is the alternator charging

Instead of crimping them, fill them with solder and push the stripped cable into them. I used to make battery cables for boats this way. Much better than crimping them. Ogre.

Taurus alternator: venting and pulley questions

Guys,

On this Taurus alternator, I have two questions:

1. What direction does the cooling air move through this alternator? Is it from the front (cool) to back (hot), or is stupid, like the stocker, where it goes from the hot back area to the front? Someone mentioned an internal fan, so it could be either...

2. Can the surpentine pulley be removed, and the old double-V fanbelt pulley be installed instead?

I forget which way it cools but its internal
Also, I used a 91 ford Tempo alternator, not a taurus, not sure if they are the same, but prob so.
On the car i got the alternator from, it was a vbelt pulley already. so no problem there.
