Cool 88 E150 Hi Milage

Hi
I have a 88 E150 Van that just turned 200,000 miles. 302 V8 auto trans
I am hoping to get some information as to how long this Van may last? It runs great!! I have replaced the timing chain, water pump, rear axle, u-joints, hoses, and power steering pump. I purchased this Van about 5 years ago with 166,000 miles on it so I don't know the history of it. It has the factory towing package.
My concern is that we drive this Van to places where it could be a long walk for help if something happens to it, such as Baja Mexico, Colorado High County.
I would be happy to replace anything that I could that might be
ready to give out but I don't know what this might be.
If it is going to need a new engine and tranny then I probably
will consider a newer model. It does need paint so before investing in the paint job I am concerned about what else may happen to it. If I can get another 50,000 miles out of it I will be happy and then upgrade.
Will the engine and tranny and electronics last 250,000 miles without major work and be dependable as we would hate to be in no mans land and break down.
ARE WE TAKING MAJOR RISKS DRIVE THIS VAN. SHOULD WE UPGRADE IT? Or spend some money to make it dependable? We like the features of this model and it is really in pretty good shape.

THANKS ALOT FOR HELPING.

Ernie, I understand your concern I sometimes have them myself. I travel long distance with my '95 Clubwagon, often driving all night through very remote stretches of interstate. My van is still going strong at 220K miles. It too has a 5 liter and automatic. I am expecting to get 300K out of it before any major work.

A 302 is about as durable as any engine you will find if well maintained. Your van probably has an AOD automatic in it and those too are quite long lasting. With age and high milage its usually the little things that cause the biggest headaches. I would replace all of the belts and hoses (including the heater hoses), fuel lines, check the battery cables and ignition parts (plugs, wires, cap). Also, service the transmission and rear end regularly (once a year or so).

MOST IMPORTANT!!! If the van does indeed have an AOD transmission in it replace the TV (Throttle Valve) cable's gromet in the throttle linkage. These gromets will get brittle and break and when they do you will burn up the transmission very quickly. A new gromet will prevent this.

Thanks for the reply. I was looking for this kind of information the Van does run very good and my WIFE thinks we should keep it. I am not sure about the AOD tranny but it does have Over Drive so I will check this out and look into the TV gasket.
Thanks
Ernie

Hi Ernie,
Welcome to the board!
I had an 84 E250 with a 302 and a c6 tranny that I sold a few years ago with 185,000 and saw it the other day with 220,000.
Another potential problem might be the brake lines If you haven't already replaced them. Up here the salt tends to eat em after a decade or so.
Cheers,
Mike
