Another thing i was wondering about was replacement parts for the gen.or the regulator.are they readily available or are they special order parts? My local parts stores dont seem to stock many parts i have needed so far.thanks
I just replaced the generator on my truck with a one wire alternator. I was going to replace the dead gen with another one until I found out the price. The alt. was half the price brand new. 60 amps right out of the box and half the price? No brainer for me and my treasurer. (She thinks I spend to much on the old girl anyways.)
Here's that picture you requested. I also have an exploded view in my parts and accessories catalog, but I couldn't seem to re-sizing it without distorting it.

small question? did you have to change brackets with the changeover and if so where did you get the brackets?

I just rebuilt my generator this fall and I when't to an electric motor repair shop. He pulled out the brushes, springs and bearings all in stock. He said the bearings have been used since the very first generators and are still used today.
Now the armature and field coils may be a different story, but they shouldn't go bad, just may need a little cleaning. My generator now looks and works like new. (Well it works on the bench fine, one of these years it will make it's way back in the truck.)
Fifth Avenue is in Clay Center, KS and sells the mounting brackets as well as the alternators. I don't think they have a website (thought I had an email address for them, but can't find it now). I've had one of their products on my truck for 4 years now and have been happy with it.
I spend $10 plus my labor. Well not counting paint. I also wore out a wire wheel getting the rust off this and a few other small parts.
Bearings were about 6-7 bucks. Brushes and springs were only a buck or two.
My uncle (He owns an independent auto parts store) gave me a 6 volt voltage regulator. Those you can get a new one for about $25.
If you have a parts manual it will have a good exploded diagram to go by for doing it yourself. It is not too difficult.
I modified the existing pivot bracket like the Pic. from Kenny shows. I mounted the swing bracket in the same place and bolted into the backside of alt. housing to get the proper line up on the belt. I then made the steady bracket out of some one inch flatstock and bolted to waterpump bolt. Works great.
I didn't have to wire up anything. It is the original alternator from the factory, which uses an external regulator.
Here is an exploded view from the manual:
thanks for the info guys. thanks for the diagram kennny. could anyone recomend a good illistrated manual on my 58.sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words.I have seen a lot of manuals available but i dont want to have to buy more than one to find a good illistrated version?I dont mind spending a little extra on a good one. thanks
