Hi I own a 1992 ford ranger with a 4.0 liter and manual trans. My problem is the other day after i stopped for gas when i turned the key it just clicked. after a few attempts it went ahead and started. since then some times it starts right off and others it will click while yet others it may click, then start to turn then stop and then turn again. When it fails to start I have tried to move the clutch with no change. My truck also has tilt wheel and I have tried changing the tilt (thinking that it may be the ingition swith)
it doesn't seem to have any effect. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
If I understand correctly it won't crank at times, you only hear a click. If this is the case have your battery tested, check the connection to the battery and inspect your cables for corrosion.
Definately sounds like a battery cable or battery connection. Follow Ken's advice about getting the battery tested (most parts stores will do this free of charge) make sure they do both a 'cell' and 'load' test - this tests the condition of the individual battery cells and simulates the battery under load conditions. I would also suggest buying a cheap battery terminal cleaning tool, disconnet both cables and cleam the connectors and the posts.
If the problem recurs in a fairly short time, and you know the battery itself is good, the replace the battery cables.
For some reason Battery is coming up as a clickable link on my screen - of course, it's a dead link and leads only to a 'cannot be displayed' message but it is coming up as a link - for me.
Also might be your starter going out, somthing like that kinda happened to me. You'd turn the key, and nothing would happen, then 1 second later you'd turn it again and it'd fire right up. Then pretty soon it just wouldnt start at all
