Just bought an f250 91 with the inline 6 engine. The guy said he replaced the timing gears recently but I still hear a knock in the lower front area of the engine. anyone have any ideas? The guy thought it might be that he didn't get the new timing gears seated all the way. Would that cause a knock though?
How's your Oil Pressure holding? If oil pressure is very low but not low enough for the Check Engine light to trigger, then it will manifest itself as a knocking noise. Get an mechanical or electric oil pressure gauge to see what actual oil pressure your engine is gettin in PSI.
Stock gauge works off of a switch. It's where you see it if it's over 6-8psi and drops to nothing under that. Started this in '90. Get a sender from an earlier truck and pull the instrument panel out and solder a wire across the resistor that runs into the oil pressure gauge. Ever notice that needle doesn't really move when the revs go up or down or when it warms up? That's why.
No, not a Ford tech but I have had to spend a lot of time getting this $700 truck dependable and liveable and have learned a lot from here on the way...
I think this was done because people who had no idea that oil pressure is *supposed* to vary a little didn't complain to the dealer, apparently there was a problem with too many people not understanding the fluctuation!?!?
There's a tech article on ford-trucks.com on this but applies to gas jobs as well..

OMG! That's really sad, if true. In my mind, I like to pretend that those of us driving trucks were smarter than the average American. That is so *($%^@! sad....
Hey...my truck was only hundreds, as well. $500., for my '88 F150. And it suits me fine, except for my current EFT problems.
Well, if you're not a tech, did you get your depth of knowledge here, or at the diesel site, or do you have a tech in your back pocket? I'm just wonderin' why I don't know more--lol
