Hey every one out there...I have a 79 Bronco that I was going to put a 460 in BUT...what about STROKING it? Has anyone ever done a power stroke diesel swap? I know some of you will HATE this idea but I've always loved the power strokes and boy would I love to do something like this. Anyone one out there got any tips...ideas...or know witch doctor who can help me?
Sounds cool to me! I've seen a few posts on here about it, but it doesn't sound like anybody here has actually gone through with it.
There was one on ebay before, it was pretty bad a$$
i think its agreat idea! its just no one has gone through with it yet, and just like buckeye said, you will have to give more support to the frame so it can handle the torque. not to mention it would be very cool for you to do this conversion due the fact that there is no such thing as a ford diesel before 85! it will in turn be more work for you though. you will have to custom build your motor mounts, as you know will need to preaty much change your whole engine components besides the drive shafts, you will need the 5speed/E4od tranny that comes with that year motor. you will have to change your whole fuel system. if your doner truck is later than 92, then you will have convert your speedo and rear axle so your truck cpu can work off of the VSS ring. preaty much get yourself a complete donor rig and just swap everything! goodluck!
Yeah thats what I thought. It's finding the donor rig thats in good shape. I'd like to get a roll over or something like that. I'll look around and see what I come up with. I'll keep every one informed.
That sounds like an awesome idea. I would search for swaps into a 77-79 F250/F350 because I would think that swap would be much more realistic (I have seen one). The ideal doner truck would be a 94.5-97 F350 so you could have the solid front axle to match. Even if you could find a write off it would still be pricey.
just keep in mind that the P.S> diesel block weighs in at something like 1000+ pounds ! I've never seen a f-150 diesel, but have owned f-250 s.c. diesel and it was very nose heavy.
in my cartoon bubble I see a bronco with a low nose and rear wheels off the ground!
i think you should still try for it, beefup the frontend with nice springs, then move whatever you can to the back of the truck (batteries washerfluid ect...)
Why can't you just find a f-350 powerstroke and remove the body, then modify the frame to fit the bronco body on it. It seems like it would be easier to adapt the bonco body to the chassis than add everything to your existing frame. I have thought about this conversion as well. It sure would turn some heads to hear a diesel under that bronco hood.
snackboy is right, it would be so much easier to find a donor HD truch and "steal" the whole front end and drive train rather than finding a bunch of aftermarket parts. there was a mechanic where I work that took the diesel from a 95 f250 and put it in a 95 bronco, it was pretty sweet, dont know how he went about doing it though

Have you ever considered running for public office?
Since I own both a Powerstroked Superduty, and a '79 Bronco I have though about this swap in detail.......
If I had unlimited time and an unlimited pocketbook I'd jump right on this swap......but I don't, so I won't.
I will say that I do not believe there is not one single item on the Bronco (to include the frame itself) that is strong enough to live under a PSD for any length of time. Hell, I've blown up the 9" twice, killed a C-6, and have a pile of mangled stub shafts from the Dana 44 from just the power of a lightly massaged 400M.
I'd have to side with snackboy on this. It would be easier to chop an F-350 frame down an bolt the Bronco on top.
Actually, it would be easiest for Ford to chop two doors off an Ex, bob the tail and sell it to me as an all new Bronco.......that would be the cats ***.
