I have an engine that you can only turn about 1/8 stroke with a wrench. the tranny is still hooked up and I believe that that is what is hanging it up. Any way. we are trying to figure out what it is. cant see the # on the crank. Only can see the # on the connecting rods. this is not a crossbolted blck. but if I read the connecting rods correctly, it should be a 427. the connecting rods are c3ae. what do i have
c3ae doesnt mean its a 427, it was made in 63 for a car is all that means, what is the block casting #'s, thats more helpful but to know for sure you would have to measure the stroke.
Well we tried to figure the stroke out, but like I said, the engine wont turn a full stroke. I think that the old FMX that is bolted to it is holding it up. I will have to split the two apart and then try. KURT
C3AE rods were common to 390, 406 and 427's. You've most likely got a 390. Pull all the spark plugs and pour in a quart of ATF into all the cylinders. then try to rotate the crank.
Where is the #1 piston located? If you can get it to tdc then you can measure the difference in stroke using the #1 and #4 cylinders without having to turn it completely over.
No. The engine is at Clints. Kaylle and I think that the transmission is holding it up. It is an automatic. It isnt that important, just was curious as to what it was.
If you can see the crank casting number, that will tell what is in there. The number one piston is the "front-driver-side" and the number four is "rear-driver-side".
I do not understand the problem with the tranny you are having. Have you tried to disconnect the linkage and/or put the trans in Neutral? If that doesn't work, your engine may be seized, or the starter, if attached may be bound....
First off, if you know anything about the FE engine family, you would know that the #1 psiton is on the Passenger side front of the engine and that #4 is at the rear on that same side.
The tranny has been put in Neutral several times and it still doesnt allow the engine to roll a full stroke. The engine (pistons and crank) are not seized. Though the valves may be stuck causing a problem. There is no starter.

I sure thats what he meant or he was drinking to many beers. We all know the number cylinder in on the passenger side. And in the cab its on the right bank so i am not sure what was up with him but he usually knows what he is talking about. I think!
Sounds like something has dropped into a cylinder stopping your rotating assembly (maybe a valve). Pull the heads off and see what you come up with from there.
now I remember what I was thinking... Last time I was doing some quick cylinder numbering, the motor was on the engine stand turned upside down (wow, a bright flash of clear-headedness).
