Wow!
Took awile to get there.I haven't been on the boards to much lately cause of all the fishing I've been doing!
Now that the mighty striped bass have moved on to their warmer water winter hangouts,I'll be voicing my thoughts here a little more often, and peppering the guys in the Big Bronco forum with ?'s.
Gotta' get the Bronc ready for the spring run!
Andy,
over 6 posts/day?Dang man!
3BC. Fish stories?Well I do have a story of the 1 that got away.
I've caught my share of keeper stripers this fall, but one night stands out.
Met a pal on the beach about 5 pm.He was fishing with clams and already had his 2 bass limit in the box (up to 33",13 lbs.)+ a few more he released.
I baited up with some clam and tossed out.Didn't like the spot I was in so I reeled in to cast to the left of him.He started b#tchin',
better not cross my line blah, blah, blah.
So I took off my clam rig and started throwing plugs further up the beach.Still a little flustered from our verbal banter,I let go with one of my biggest plugs.2 or 3 cranks of the hancle and WHAM ,fish on!Definitly the largest bass I've ever hooked into,
easy 20lbs.Wasn't ready for this you see.Fought it for a few minutes, then nothin'.Continued the retrieve cause you never know if they're still following.Got my plug in and saw that this cow
straightened out the big @ss treble hook on the plug.Oh well!
Hooked and landed 5 more that night.
Haha, I have caught some MONSTER fish, and hooked some even bigger monsters, on the unlikely occurance. a 7 foot Garfish while brim fishing? (That means a small #2 hook with a worm and a cork) Thrown out a broken back landed directly on top of a log. Rig never came back up from initial splash. thought it got caught on the log when it hit, I tugged and yanked, every time moved the back of the boat towards the log, EXACTLY like it was stuck. All of a sudden it just TOOK OFF after a few minutes got it in, fish never broker surface, Grandpa is commenting on how big of a bass it must be (Gar *ALWAYS* break surface before striking and while fighting.) 4 1/2 foot gar. Threw out one morning in the Atchafalyia Basin bass fishin, water was clear, threw 25-30 yards out with a shallow running crank bait. bait hit water, I waited a few seconds, all of a sudden the BIGGEST bass I have ever seen struck it and ran.....thing looked to be well over 24 inches. WELL OVER. Needless to say that one got away. That say, myself, my grandapa, and two friends of ours, brought in over 100 bass in less than 2 hours. Busiest day of fishing I have EVER had. But I prefer catching Gar any daay of the week, alot better of a fight, and smoke em they taste pretty good. And in order to bring the bass populace back up we need to fish out more the gar. I wish there was still soem of thsoe record 9 footers up here in Arkansas in the river....taht would be fun. BTW all those fish stories are all from Lousiana. I have caught and hooked some Monster out there, biggest was a 6 ft shark, caught what I imagine was a small red, when the shark we saw 30 minutes earlier we imangine nabbed the fish and shredded my line. The shark woulda been mine, except last cast I had got hooked on the shell bottom and popped my line and lost my last leader. Woulda loved to have some shark for supper. Also hooked plenty of gators while fishing top water, gators love to chase poppers. Biggest fish I have landed was a 36 inch white drum, my uncle landed one about 5 minutes before, they provided plenty of food, invited our whole family and my gals family over for supper, but IMHO it tasted like crap next time I catch a white or black drum over 24 in it is goin back in. Now a Red Drum over 24, heehee He gonna be supper. I never was to fond of surf fishing the whole incedent where a shark came up and took off with the stringer from another surf fisher has kinda kept me a bit weary, I mean what would you do if you where out there fishing hip deep, felt a tug, and saw a 6-8ft shark eating your catch close enough to touch? I have seen some guys pull out monster 36 inch reds surf fishing just out past the second sand bars. But that is farther than I wish to go sometimes. Especially with there seamin to be a bit more shark activety as of late. And porpoises have been up close as of late, for those of you ot fisher men this is not a good thing. As they are normally passive cretures, if you bloody a trout or red or some otehr medium sized fish any near them, just hook it foul, or however, porpoises become highly aggresive. Of course there is always the chance of foul hooking a porpoise as it swims near a baited hook, or having it strike a hook bated with crab or croker....I have seen a video of school or porps sink a boat after one of them got hooked when it chowed down on a foul hooked striper......bad news that...
Sorry, long post, been a while since I tlaked fish
BTW Congrats on 300!!! When you gonna catch up with me and Andy?
I don't have many bad fishing stories, as I gave that up mostly a few years ago... I love fishing, I just haven't had the time for it
I've had my good days, and my bad days.
Never langed a real monster before. But my grandfather has caught a ton of monsters in his life mostly out of the river.
We have some huge catfish in the river down here.
Jimmy Dean,
You can talk fishin' with me any time brother!I've seen some nice red drum caught at Hatteras,N.C. up to 50"!
Fordfaggiole,
If you ever get a chance to go to Cape Cod,GO! Some of the best striper fishing there is.Up around P'town at a place called Race Point.Don't know where you are in Maine but it's worth the trip.June, late Sept.-early Oct.
I'm going to try to dig up a site of some outrageous shark fishing from shore that I saw.
I'll be back.
Nice ma, maybe I need to head over there one day and look into finding somewhere to get a few 'sandbars' down here in the south. Where exactly where tose guys at? There is the occasional Tiger, but most sharks, aside from nurse and sands, are Bull sharks, have even seen a few on occasion in teh freshwater. Tehy do not last long as every coonass and their mother go out with bait and guns to get supper......same thing hapens whenever a large gator is located. It is rare for a 8 ft or larger gator to be spotted, and still be alive in the week.
