I just found this site and just had to join in the discussion being a proud new Ford Truck owner and all .
My first truck was bought new in 1974 . It is a F-100 with the 300ci 6 cylinder and has 345k on it using Phillips 10/30 - straight 30 and 10/40 all it's life . It still runs well but I just purchased a 2004 with the 5.4 engine and want to drop a note asking what brands some of you are using to lubricate this new generation engine . I have 2500 miles on it now and think it is time for the first oil change .
I would use the 5w20 that ford recommends, at least until the warranty is up. I use the motorcraft semi synthetic $1.77 @ walmart. I have heard that it doesn't matter which brand you choose, but I decided to use the same thing my taurus came with. I probably will start using chevron 5w30 dino at about 35k unless I see engines lasting 200k+ on the 5w20.

I agree. According to what I've read and heard, Motorcraft 5W-20 is a very good oil, so you won't be compromising anything by sticking to the factory spec during the warranty period.
