rough idle - compressor clutch

My `97 explorer 4.0 v-6 has developed a rough idle (500 - 900 rpm) that modulates with the engagement of the ac clutch. Clutch engages for 4-5 seconds then dis-engages for a 4-5 seconds. Cycling continues until temp switch is set to off or ac. With either ac or off selected, cycling stops and idle smoothes out to about 8-900. Anyone seen this before?

my 96 does the same thing ac is not even on and the clutch opens and closes till the engine warms up then it stops
don't have a clue what it is

The AC even works on defrost

To eliminate possible compresor problems, disconnect the electrical connector that goes to the electrical compressor clutch. Just follow the wire.
