A friend has a 97 Explorer Sport that pours smoke from under the hood (passenger side toward the top, near windshield) while stopped at a traffic light or parked & shut off. The smoke is odorless and white. She's noticed that it does this most often after she uses the Bi-Level/AC. The problem is intermittent, as I've driven with her and haven't seen it happen yet. Anyone have any suggestions before she takes it to a Ford dealer? She's afraid it won't do it when she gets there and they'll send her home with no diagnosis.
Sounds like there is a cracked gasket and oil is leaking on the manifolds. The 4.0's have been known for this problem...
I would suggest taking it to a couple of shops and getting estimates, including Ford. It is one of those jobs that can be done at most shops - but tell them to choose the shop they are most comfortable with and the price is something they can handle...
Just wanted to let everyone know that this problem has been solved! Turns out it was the Heater Control Valve leaking coolant on the engine. This is what was causing the "smoking" problem. We will be picking up a new valve tomorrow for approx. $28.
