01 explorer sport auto trans problems

I have a 2001 Explorer Sport 4x4 with the 4.0L V-6 and the automatic transmisson. I bought it almost a year ago used through the ford certified used vehicle program, or whatever it's called. It came with the 75000 mi powertrain warrenty, and I has just over 38k on it now. Last week, after slightly spinning the tires on ice from slight throttle application after a warm startup, the transmission was noticibly slipping as if it was in a higher gear with the torque converter unlocked. I drove for a short distance at about 40 mph and the O.D. light started flashing. I stopped, put it in park, shut it down, and restarted it. The light was off, and I was able to get it home, but it was shifting very loose and sloppy. It was also starting to make a moaning or quiet howling noise in 4th gear at about 45 mph. I took it to the Ford dealer, and they acted like it was a common problem and orderd a few parts (OD drum, and a valve, I'm not sure of the specifics). They pulled the pan and found large chunks of metal, and said that they were either going to have to rebuild it or replace it depending on the decsicion of a Ford inspector. Has anyone else had a similar problem with a Ford auto tranny? I've driven a lot of trucks with auto trannys and they seem to be better than this one. I'm sorry to admit that they were in GM trucks, which I generally don't like. What do you guys think of Ford auto trannys? At this rate, I don't think I will be buying another Ford with an automatic transmission. The diesel truck with the manual is great, and I would probably buy a new one in the future. Thanks for any help or info!
