i just bought a truck and was told it had a 360 and the seller gave me the # to the previous owner and when i called him he said thats a really strong 390 so i was woundering if there was somthing that i could lok for to tell what kind of motor i have. thanks for the help
ell sense it isnt in the Fe forumn yet ill tell you a little about the difference the 360 and 390 are basucally the same, the 360 has a stoke of 3.5 and the bore of 4.05, the 390 has a stroke of 3.78 and a bore of 4.05 but is a lot better than the 360, more torque and hp a little worse on gas milleage but the 390 with a little money can produce good hp and good torque, i see your name says muddy ford 75 so im assuming the truck is a 75 if its the original motor the hp dropped a little in 73 due to emissions, and they also went to net hp, that means hp is measured at the wheels instead of the flighwheel, the 390 is a very reliable motor, sounds like you got a good deal if it is a 390.
as far as know there is no way of telling if you have a 390 or a 360 without measuring the stroke, the castings are the same, you can pull out one of the plugs and use a long wooden dowel to measure the stroke, be sure to dissconect the coil wire if you do that
on the frivers side valve cover theres a sticker that tells cubic inches as that could be gone or different valve covers put on,you can also do this to know for sure, you can take the #1 and #4 spark plugs out turn the engine over to where the #1 piston is to the top, that would make the #4 piston all the way down, take a wooden dowel approx. 10 in long put it in the #1 spark plug hole till it hits the top of the piston the mark it with a marker, and then put the dowel in the #4 spark plug hole and do the same, 360 would measure 3.5, 390 would measure 3.75. if you didnt undertsand that let me know and i can explain it better.
