Mine loped like that from time to time, not sure what it was.
I can also say that mine never did it when it was plugged in for the night.
I had about 245,000 on mine when it started to do this, how many do you have on yours?
I can tell you all the old Detroit Diesels (6V53, 6V71, 8V71, 8V92) had the same loping when they were cold. It smoothed up as the engine got to operating temp. Those were all 2 stroke diesels that ran for a boat load of miles, many still are.
I just talked to a friend that had this problem on his 6.9. He took his injection pump to get it rebuilt and they found a shaft in the governor part of the pump that had grooves in it where an O ring rode on the shaft. Evidently when the O ring was cold it was crawling into the grooves and hopping out of the grooves causing the lope. A new shaft fixed the problem. They thought it was just an aggravation that would not affect the performance of the motor or how long it would run.
Dave,
thank for your reply!
hey I have 190k on mine old beast, no your right it doesn't seem to affect the drivability when its warmed up, the main concern i have is safety when its "loping" and in gear untill its warm which takes awhile, It does not have the surging when i use the block heater , probably cause it is already warm,
, i will have a look at the injection pump when i get back home.
You will need to go to a shop that works on injection pumps. The shaft is inside the pump in the governor part of the pump. It was a friend of mine that had it done to his truck. I will try to see him and ask but I usually do not see him till the weekend.
I would agree with fordiesel69, air in the fuel system.
It took me a while before I 'got it' and it pretty near drove me crazy, it's not fuel leaking out but air leaking in and allowing the fuel in the filter to siphon back to the tank.
Thank god for clear fuel line,
wow you guys are great! at least i have someplase to look now,
my fuel lines arnt clear tho, im afraid if i take the fuel line off it wont remain tight anymore but well see
Not only that but if you disturb it much at all you will wind up replacing all the o rings on the return hoods as well as all the return lines between injectors. After a bunch of miles with hot fuel through them they do not like being disturbed.
If it were air, the problem would not go away when the engine was up to temp.
in my case it because i wana get the most education for my money hehe, i do this with all my vehicles, im all about pinching a penny till lincoln blusehes, but any way its snowing good here and i can play in it,
